Routine eye exams are an important part of good healthcare. In some cases, serious eye or medical problems are first discovered in a routine exam. In general, the earlier a potential problem is diagnosed, the better the prognosis for treatment. Our eye examination is exceptionally thorough and is designed to be a comprehensive checkup of the visual system and overall eye health. We incorporate technology to assist in the evaluation of spectacle and contact lens prescriptions, peripheral vision, intraocular pressure, and the general health of the eye.

The examination allows us to determine what type of vision correction is best suited for each individual patient. Your ability to see clearly at different distances will be tested to determine a proper prescription for glasses and or contact lenses. It includes the measurement of visual acuity, and a computer-assisted measurement of your refractive error. Your specific visual problems and needs are taken into consideration before the final correction is determined.

Various computerized instruments and procedures are used to evaluate your eyes for disease. A biomicroscope is used to check for cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, ocular allergies, macular degeneration, blood vessels and retinal problems, as well as evidence of systemic disease. Common systemic conditions detected on a routine eye examination include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and many neurological conditions. It may also be necessary to have dilation eye drops instilled at our visit in order to attain views of the retina which require the pupil to be dilated.

Various other tests include corneal thickness pachymetry, depth perception or 3-D vision, ocular muscle vergence fusion, and colour vision assessment may also be performed. Digital retinal imaging is recommended to establish a baseline and to ensure accurate and detailed comparison from one year to the next. The final consultation includes a summary of our findings and discussion of the appropriate treatment options. Your treatment is related to your symptoms, findings and visual requirements. It may include eyeglasses, contact lenses, laser surgery (LASIK or PRK) or referral to another specialist. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions about our findings and treatment plans.
